Installing VMWare tools on headless CentOS box

  1. Create new VM.
  2. Install CentOS via NetInstall or similar.
  3. Run “yum update”.
  4. Under the Guest menu in VMWare, do “Guest > Install/Upgrade VMware tools”.
  5. At a shell prompt, as root, do “mkdir /media/cdrom”.
  6. At the prompt, do “mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom”
  7. Change to root’s home directory: “cd /root”.
  8. Type “tar xvfz /media/cdrom/VMwareTools-4.0.0-171294.tar.gz”
  9. Type “cd vmware-tools-distrib”.
  10. Type “./vmware-install.pl”.

That’s it. Reboot or shut down. Consider creating a clone of the image.
